The running board delete was crucial. Nice look.

I hate the way the fenders look without the running boards...but I am NOT going to repaint my lower body just to do a fender delete. I was thinking about getting some satin/galvanized allen heads and filling the bolt holes with those to make it look all tough and stuff. Maybe I can fab up a really thin "fender" to bolt up with those bolts. I love the way the 80 looks without fenders, but I hate the idea of repainting. For one, I don't need the expense and for another, I want to keep stock or returnable to stock.

I think it looks good this way, though I need a pic reference of the old way to confirm your worries about the fenders.

Well, this isn't exactly returnable to stock, but check out the cool spray-on bedliner fender delete.

Here is a perfect example of the problem with removing the fender flares. The car looks better, but the holes look stupid.

Kinja'd!!!

And here is what It looks like with a proper re-spray

hate hate HATE. Bedliner re-sprays. No offense, but I really dislike the way they look.

I see what you mean, are there maybe cool bolt on replacement fender flares for cheap? Maybe an opposing color for some style? If not your allen heads that you talked about may actually look cool, and if not it's a cheap attempt.

How far is your drive to Moab? Have fun and keep the rubber down!

Wow, never seen one without the fenders before. Nicer look! But yeah, that's a lot of work. While you're fuming away behind the steering wheel, though, rest assured that it doesn't look THAT bad ;)

about 3 hours. My wheeling will be pretty light.

Good call on taking those boards off. When I first starting offroading my rig I had to spend an hour on the side of the trail taking them off after I tangled with some boulders.

As for the fenders, I like the 80s better with them on. But to make your running board delet a little clearly you can trim down the mud flaps and just cap the ends where they bolt on. It looks a LOT cleaner. That's what I did at least- dont have a shot in the rear because I have a custom rear bumper and I completely deleted the mud flap a while ago. It looked good trimmed though- stock almost.

Also HAVE A BLAST IN MOAB!

The name stuck! Awesome.

Are you bringing your bike too, or is this just an off-roading trip? As much as I want to go 4 wheeling in Moab, I kinda want to go biking there more.

Either way, have a great time and be sure to post lots of pictures!

Fins n things tomorrow morning, then Mag7 bike ride. Then more wheelin' in the klondike bluffs area Saturday morning followed by riding in that area. You can't see if from the pics, but I have 5 bike trays on the roof now. Can't decide which bike to take, may take both. Do you have any experience with bike on the roof in yours? I can't imagine it hurts the CD much more that it already is, but can you tell a difference on the highway in terms of power/mileage?

This weekend will be ideal for the wheelin/riding combo because it will be 30-40F in the mornings and 60 F and sunny in the afternoon

Haha well ok then! Not that I would build up a truck for serious off-roading, but I kinda see the rationale for that application, since the paint will probably get messed up anyway.

the lower part of the body is already heavily coated in a very durable paint. The reason people do this is because its cheaper than a proper re-spray.

Awesome. I haven't really taken long enough highway trips with bikes on the roof to really tell what sort of impact it has on mileage. I would be surprised if it had more than a 1 mpg effect though. I haven't ever really noticed a power difference, but crosswinds are a bit more noticeable.

What are your two bikes? A hardtail and a full suspension?

yeah, my old race bike (19 lbs s-works hard tail) and my trail bike (Santacruz blur)

Nice. I have tried out a few full suspension bikes, but I don't really ride gnarly enough trials to justify the added weight/power loss. My main bike is a Niner Air9, but I also have a cyclocross bike for around town/less aggressive trails.

yeah, mostly stock, bigger tires and a few little mods are about it. I don't plan on going anywhere where there will be body damage. If I can't make it with triple lockers and 33's...I shouldn't be there.

Fair enough. I just bought a '97 Tahoe that I'm doing up for Baja off road duty. Same kind of stuff, nothing crazy. Beefy wheels and tires, ditch the running boards, move the spare into the cabin, and some KC lights. But the first thing I bought was a good winch. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it, and all that noise. Of course I'm going to be driving around on beaches, so I have reason to fear getting stuck.

But anyway, have a good time. And throw a couple lengths of carpet in the back just in case you do get stuck. At least in the deserts around here, that soft sand can sneak up on ya.
